With a washout on Saturday and rain forecast for a downpour at 3pm, we agreed with the opposition skipper to start an hour early for a 20-overs match. San won the toss, his sixth in succession, thus overturning Matty’s theory of ‘tails’ always wins, and chose to bat. Ajit and Rohan made a brisk start putting on 62 in 9 overs before Ro was out, well caught in gully. Ajit continued to power his way with Atul Setia until a mix-up in the penultimate over saw Ajit run out going for an improbable single. John Behar then smashed 10 in the last over for KCC to finish on 169.

It drizzled during the innings break and when we took the field the ball was hard to grip, both by bowlers and fielders. The many loose balls were severely punished by openers Jas Sanghera and Hasan Mufti, who put on 78 in 12 overs. It did not help that we dropped 5 catches in the process. Although two wickets fell and the run rate was kept in check, come the last over they required 14 to win. The field was spread and Eddy, our wannabe ‘death’ bowler, had the ball. It made no difference. Jas hit a two, a four (should have been caught on the boundary), and a six. The next ball went for two wides and we rushed back to the pavilion soaking and sorrowfully wet.

They 243/5 in 35 overs (Ramnik Behar 155*, Tauseef Khan 25, Barua 2/31)

This game was a last-minute fixture organised through the Conference as a replacement for our scheduled game against Keble College Oxford. Given the weather forecast, however, we were glad to swap the drive up to Oxford for one nearer home in equally picturesque surroundings.

Saurav lost the toss and KCC were put in to bat on an uncertain wicket in a rain-shortened 35-overs-a-side game, KCC made a fine start with young Kabir Bali and Liam Willday making 67 in the first 12 overs. Karan Bali (16) and Rohan (28) weighed in to keep the momentum going. But the innings belonged to Kabir who played some beautiful shots and shrugged off the pressure of having both parents watching, to score a chanceless 108. The innings closed on 240 which all thought was a good score on this wicket.

Saikat Barua led the defence with a hostile opening spell, but the rest of the bowlers leaked runs and we were unable to keep up the pressure. The opposition batsmen capitalised, especially Ramnik Behar (no relation to our own) who, after an uncertain start (and a turned-down caught behind), batted with growing confidence. The match ebbed and flowed, and in the end it came down to Teddington requiring 11 in the last over. Sunil Amar was entrusted with the ball with the field spread, but sadly, even a presidential intervention was unable to stem the tide and we lost a thriller as the last ball with four required was carted by Ramnik over cow corner for six.
