Mon 2 May Frensham Lost by 6 runs
The disappointment of losing the toss was almost immediately forgotten as that man Neeraj Nayar took an excellent catch at first slip to give a delighted Ryan Konson (2-39) a wicket in the first over of the day. Ably supported by Abid Nasir (1-24) at the other end, KCC’s opening bowlers got us off to a good start as we pegged the opposition back with 3 wickets in the first 10 overs. However, the runs continued to flow at a steady rate and with none of the other KCC bowlers able to make much of an impression on the run rate despite honest (-ish) efforts which yielded wickets at regular intervals, Frensham were guided to a respectable 176/8 in the allotted 30 overs, with Richard Champneys top-scoring with a well-compiled 56. For KCC, young Stefanos Nayar picked up 2 wickets in 3 overs, and Eddy Barretto bowled a disciplined spell, picking up 2-30 off his 6.
Respectable total, but within our reach, was the general consensus expressed at the tea break where we followed the usual KCC dictum of no cake left behind.
With the weather getting worse, the KCC openers made a cautious start but we were soon in trouble as David Behar was bowled without scoring and the top order folded in the face of disciplined bowling by Frensham, especially Hally Baldock who picked up 3-17 in his six overs, leaving us at 31/4 and staring at a very early finish indeed. The middle order provided some resistance with Preetinder Singh and Abid Nasir putting up a decent partnership which briefly raise our hopes, but after they departed it was really Stefanos, with an excellent innings of 40 not out, who showed the rest of us how it should be done. Unfortunately, he ran out of partners and KCC fell 7 short of what would have been an improbable victory.

Mon 4 May Frensham Lost by 32 runs
A rare phenomenon, possibly the first time in Kensington CC history – all eleven KCC players at the ground before any of the opposition! Was this a new, fresh attitude towards timeliness and pre-match warm-ups? Sadly, no, for Frensham had it in their book for a half-an-hour later 2:00pm start and were very apologetic for the misunderstanding. Still, our turnout looked most impressive!
Chris lost the toss but it did not appear to matter as Deepak and Ryan made inroads into the Frensham top order taking 3 wickets in the first 11 overs for just 11 runs. Champneys and Smith slowly set about building an 80 run partnership, broken by new boy Abid Nasir bowling an accurate line. Chris was now able to introduce old boy Julian Halliburton into the attack. Julian, some may remember, was a left-armer with a nagging length but as he hadn’t bowled in at least six years there were plenty of long hops that the batsmen eagerly dispatched. His 6 overs cost 56 runs and the momentum swung in favour of the home side. Don’t feel bad Julian, for another laid-off old boy, Furquan Kidwai visiting from Karachi, bowled one over and was carted for 20. Frensham were able to declare on a respectable 210/8.
This was a fair challenge with short boundaries conducive to quick scoring and we had adequate firepower, or so we thought! Steve Thomas and Rohan Ghosh were run-less after 3 overs but then raced to 41 in the next 7 when Steve got a nick to the keeper. Rohan did the same next over and Furquan rounded off his dismal comeback by spooning his first ball back to the bowler. Worse followed with another down next over leaving KCC reeling at 43/4. Skipper Chris and Atif Yusuf, another debutant, steadied the innings but when Atif holed out we needed 123 in the last 20 overs to win, a chase still within our compass for Chris was now striking the ball cleanly and was ably supported by the secure Deepak. Sixes and fours were being smashed at will but it did not last as the tail crumbled dramatically. Chris played a lone hand to the end being last out for a magnificent 86 and left Frensham with a well-deserved win.
Perhaps, it’s best for KCC to arrive a little late in future!

They: 206/9 in 41.5 overs (Blythe 51, Farncombe 37, Bishop 24, Eddy Barreto 3/51, Ryan Konson 2/3, Sunil Amar 2/40)
Cricket can be an unforgiving mistress. Whether you’re at the crease for 1 ball or 100, or bowl 6 balls or 60, you’re obliged to pay £10 for the privilege. Note to Syddalls Snr & Jnr: even if your combined aggregate of runs for the match is 9 and neither of you bowl a ball, you should really be handing over your £20 BEFORE reversing out of your parking space!
KCC batted first. Skipper David Behar held the innings together with a ‘chanceless’ 92, apart from 6 missed stumpings and a drop by a KCC-supplied sub fielder (Well done Rony! Wouldn’t do to catch the skipper out on debut!). Akhi Shailendra and Rony Rahman (this time with the bat) also made useful contributions to enable KCC to post a defendable score of 202 – especially given the embarrassment of bowling riches at our disposal.
This confidence seemed justified whilst Frensham at 36/3 and 106/6 struggled to get their chase on track. Eddy, Rony, Akhi and Sunil were all in the wickets, and Gabriel and Ryan still to bowl. Cue the leg-spinner. Unfortunately, Gabriel failed to find his length as he came under pressure from Frensham’s 2 best batters, Sam Farncombe and Jack Blythe, coming in down the order after doing the bulk of the bowling. His 4 overs cost 38 runs and the momentum swung Frensham’s way. Eddy and Ryan got us back in the game by removing them in quick succession to break their stand of 76. However, Ryan’s figures of 4 overs, 2 wickets for 3 runs was not quite enough as Frensham skipper Adam Page belted Sunil back over his head for 6 and then 4 to see his team home with 1 wicket to spare.
A game played in great spirit on a beautiful spring day.

We 190/10 in 41.4 overs (Rohan Ghosh 55, David Behar 33, Bernard van Vuuren 33*, Peter Syddall 23, C.McLean 4/29, S.Grundy 3/30)
Frensham recorded a tight victory over KCC by 3 runs. Kensington were well behind on the run chase but some majestic late hitting by Bernard van Vuuren took us close but not quite close enough.
On a gorgeous day in this picturesque corner of Surrey, Frensham set up victory with a solid batting display with contributions all the way down the order. Hector was top scorer with notable contributions from former KCC stalwart Ian Mclean, Seb Grundy and David Stone. KCC’s battery of seamers all performed creditably with new boy Ryan Konson the pick and Khush the top wicket taker. We were happy to have restricted Frensham to 193 off 45 overs on a small ground – helped not a little by Rohan’s immaculate keeping display.
When KCC went out to bat however, the only real partnership of substance was a 2nd wicket stand of 82 between Syddall Snr (Peter not Spring) and Rohan – with the latter completing a typically stylish 50. After their departure, wickets continued to fall steadily and the chase was getting away from KCC. With 47 runs still required for victory, enter Bernard stage right, coming in at number 8. He proceeded to rain 6s over long on until there were only 4 runs required with last man Khush facing the last over. Unfortunately, Khush was undone by a wickedly speared-in yorker (or so he says) by part time off-spinner Seb Grundy and the game was up!

We 198/9 in 45 overs (Gabriel Thomas 50*, Neeraj Nayar 36, Tabrez Khan 28, Stubbs 4/21)
They 199/4 in 37 overs (Chuter 49, Grundy 32, Charman 30, Neeraj Nayar 2/20)
KCC won the toss and elected to bat on this most batsman-friendly of grounds; however, after a slow start, wickets fell regularly to the accurate pace of Stubbs and a range of ambitious strokes. KCC’s innings was rescued from 119/6 by an unbeaten 50 from Gabriel Thomas, but 198 was never likely to be a challenging total on this small ground, particularly given Kensington’s bowling attack had to take the field after gorging on cakes and sandwiches. Frensham won comfortably by 6 wickets.
